Watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship on television has made droves of people around the world become familiar with Mixed Martial Arts or more commonly known as MMA. A combat sport that mixes martial art disciplines, you can revel in the many fighting styles incorporated into one ring. Basically, MMA includes famous fighting styles such as karate, boxing, muay thai, wrestling, judo, jiu jitsu, and tae kwon do among others.
The birth of modern MMA has its roots way back in the 1920s. Courtesy of the iconic Gracie Family of fighting champs, they held Vale Tudo tournaments in Brazil. Comprising of martial artists from across the land, they engage in hand to hand combat sans weapons and strict rules.
MMA has indeed come a long way ever since the Vale Tudo tournaments. While still has that grappling entertainment, MMA tournaments are safer as it ever had been. An MMA fighter stands tall and aggressively proud, ready to take on anyone inside the ring or cage. More knockouts can be seen during a MMA championship battle, more than what you see on boxing matches.
MMA is considered to be the ultimate in martial arts and it is proof that you can combine different combat styles and techniques respective of each fighting discipline. While some fighters have scored and earned notable victories by engaging in fierce ground-and-pound fighting styles throughout their careers, some fighters only rely on a handful of techniques while taking on a combat style that allow their strengths come into play.
MMA fighters get into rigorous training, figuring out their weaknesses and increasing their strengths. With the evolution of the MMA as a combat sport, today’s fighters have become way more disciplined, better-rounded, and better athletes. MMA has proven that incorporating many styles can either be successful or ineffective and lots of MMA fighters can use any fighting discipline that they want providing that they comply with the rules of the match.
To be in the game, you should be decked with appropriate MMA gear. MMA shorts, tops, shirts, gloves, and accessories are essential for every fighter in the game. Knee and elbow pads, handwraps, mouth guards, groin protectors for men, head guards, and gym bags are all part of what a fighter needs when involved in a MMA match. For instance, MMA gloves are used by many fighters as it gives them the chance to grapple more effectively.
While martial arts gear is tremendously important, it should be noted that the style and discipline are traits in what makes a fighter. Although both pop culture and the media have often depicted mixed martial arts or ultimate fighting as violent, rough, and brutal as many consider it, in fact, it is far from the grappling, the chokeholds, and the full nelson maneuvers that many fighters have been identified with. MMA is an art, set on a foundation of honor and respect, taught in many fighting disciplines. While some people may be turned off by its almost ferocious way of combat, at the end of the day, the art that many fighters have trained to do is what keeps it alive and kicking.
