MMA Clothing From Past To Present

Mixed martial arts is a combat sport that synthesizes various types of martial arts. Because of this, it has deep historical roots in various continents, countries, and even philosophies. One of the first rules of the game that you should be acquainted with, however, is the MMA clothing. Unlike other sports where costumes and masks are even allowed, the combination of shorts and gloves that are allowed in MMA are specifically designed to meet certain needs and requirements. Here is mixed marital arts’ clothing as it has evolved from the past up to the present.

No clothes
There was no MMA clothing in some of the earliest predecessors of mixed martial arts. One of the earliest recorded sport events similar to MMA was the wrestling matches in Greece and Rome. These were called the pankration and the pancratium, respectively. In these sports which were conducted in the massive coliseums of Rome, the athletes came out with no clothing on. There was no protection and the first MMA rings during these ancient times were the dirt grounds of Rome. Without the protective covering of MMA shorts and MMA gloves, however, one can easily imagine how easy it was to be bruised even without the use of complex and powerful techniques.

Too much clothes
On the other side of the globe, however, clothing was donned on in excess. Some of the eastern influences of mixed martial arts were the sumo wrestlers of Japan as well as the marital artists of China which conducted Judo and taekwondo. Here, robes were usually worn. The robes in these disciplines are also used to indicate the training level and degree of mastery which each martial artist has attained. While there is nothing wrong with the clothes that were used in the east, they tend to give the players an upper hand especially since some robes can be quite protective and can even be used to easily facilitate certain techniques.

Just the right combination
MMA clothing today takes the form of the MMA shorts and the MMA gear. These provide just the right level of protection for the sensitive areas of the body and prevent injury in some of the most used parts of the body – the hand and fist. Robes are no longer allowed in most MMA tournaments, although special gears are applied by those who practice specific traditions within MMA. There are specific Muay Thai gear and BJJ gear, for instance. For all purpose games and the average enthusiast who wants to begin MMA training, however, the gloves and shorts are enough – as long as the pair that you choose are made from high quality fabrics and carefully stitched together to provide you with plenty of use.

The next time you watch an MMA combat on television or on the nearest MMA arena near you, you will know just why the MMA fighters are wearing the gear that they are wearing, and nothing else. If you want to get in the game, you also know just what type of MMA clothing you need to have with you.
